Global Pink Salmon Shortage Looms Despite Larger Alaskan Harvest

July 28, 2025 - As we enter the last week of July, pink salmon landings in Alaska are beginning to ramp up, while sockeye landings are winding down. So far, over 90% of the state’s preseason sockeye forecast has already been harvested.

SINBAD
Based on 2023 trends, the bulk of Alaska Pink salmon landings will happen throughout August, and then wind down from September on.

Alaska's pink salmon harvest is expected to be strong this year, with the preseason forecast marking the highest since 2017.

Notably, in 3 of the last 5 odd-numbered years, actual harvests have exceeded forecasts - and in the other 2, landings still reached over 90% of projected volumes.

While Alaska is expected to have a strong pink salmon season, the same cannot be said for Russia.

This year’s Russian forecast is just 189,000 metric tonnes - 50% below the last odd-year forecast and 60% lower than the actual 2023 harvest. Latest harvest updates out of Russia are showing that over 110,000 metric tonnes of pink salmon has been harvested equating to about 60% of the forecast already.

Notably, in recent years, pink salmon harvest in Russia during odd-numbered years have always exceeded the preseason forecast.

2025 Summer Pink Salmon Update

Even-numbered years show a different story as last year saw one of the worst pink salmon harvest for both Alaska and Russia.

Globally, Alaska and Russia together account for the vast majority of global pink salmon production, with Russia typically contributing around 65% and Alaska approximately 30%.

If both regions achieve their harvest forecasts this year, total global supply can be estimated to reach roughly 400,000 metric tonnes - down 43% or 300,000 metric tonnes from the last odd-numbered year, 2023.

Following one of the lowest pink salmon harvests on record last year, there is likely no remaining carryover inventory, setting the stage for yet another year of tight supply and potential shortages of pink salmon.

Regarding fish size, In the past two odd-numbered years with record-high pink salmon harvests, average weights were about 3 pounds in the whole round for Alaska and 2.5 pounds for Russia.

If this year results in another low-yield season, we could see larger average fish sizes. While it’s too early to say for certain, historical trends suggest the potential for slightly larger pinks this year.

2025 Summer Pink Salmon Update

Our recommendation is to make your commitments early for your entire pink salmon requirements. Global pink salmon supply is anticipated to be tight - though we should not see a repeat of last year’s record low.
