Pollock "A" Season Update: Harvest Slowdown, Supply Forecast, Pricing Outlook

April 15th, 2024 - As the Pollock “A” Season concludes, Russia has already exceeded harvesting over 1 million metric tonnes, marking a 6 percent increase from last year.

SINBAD
Despite this year's Russian Total Allowable Catch for Pollock increasing by 11 percent over the previous year, landing totals hovered around 1.9 million metric tonnes in both 2023 and 2022.

In contrast, Alaska's fishermen have netted over 600,000 metric tonnes, marking a 6 percent decrease from the same period last year.

This includes over 530,000 metric tonnes from the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands, and more than 70,000 from the Gulf of Alaska.

With Alaska's Pollock TAC set at approximately 1.5 million metric tonnes this year, it's anticipated that the quota will be fully utilized.

Alaska A Season Pollock Update

As we move forward, fishing efforts for Pollock in both Alaska and Russia are expected to slow, leading to reduced landings until activities resume later in the year.

Alaska Pollock landings typically ramp back up mid July/August (as the Alaska Summer Salmon fishery winds down), and Russia’s catch will ramp back up in October.

Given these dynamics, our recommendation is to secure your Pollock requirements. As supplies dry up, prices are likely to rise—compounded by the ban on Russian-origin Pollock entering the USA.

Current pricing for the new season Alaska Pollock fillets in North America ranges from $2.75/lb USD for 2-4oz sizes to $3.75/lb for 4-6oz.

Alaska A Season Pollock Update

In China, the price for Alaska Pollock raw materials is on the rise, in stark contrast to the declining prices for Russian Pollock.

Prices for smaller 500 to 700g Alaska Pollock are around $1850 per metric tonne, with larger sizes fetching over $2000, compared to Russian Pollock at $950 per metric tonne.
