Alaska & Russia Pollock: A Review Of The International Pollock Markets

April 9, 2018 - In this week's episode we will review International Pollock markets.

Russian Raw materials have reached $1,250 per metric tonne as of last month, a stark increase from last April, when headed and gutted Russian Pollock was just below

$1,000 per metric tonne. According to Russian Fishing News last week, overall Russian seafood harvests are down 1.2 percent from last year.

In the Far East Basin, Pollock harvests as of April 4th were 837 thousand metric tonnes, down about 5 percent year-to-year.

Pollock fishing was disrupted in March during bouts of bad weather in the Sea of Okhotsk, where Pollock harvests are around 700 thousand metric tonnes - down 6 percent from last year.

Alaska Pollock landings as of the end of last month totalled 556 thousounds metric tonnes in the Bering Sea and 74 thousand tonnes in the Gulf.

These harvest totals are quite similar to the landing tallies from the end of April 2017, so it appears that catches may be sightly lagging year-to-year.

Several Chinese processors reported large volumes of raw materials arriving next week with stronger fillet pricing to come.

--- Twice frozen IQF Pollock fillets were around $1.15 to $1.20 on the West Coast for the begining three months of the year.

Buyers should expect fillets to reach $1.30/lb in Los Angeles by late May/early June with no relief for the foreseeable future.

Although harvests are reportedly lower, we are seeing no supply gaps, both 2-4oz and 4-6oz fillets are in steady supply.

Our advice to Pollock buyers is to buy now to avoid rising prices in the summer.

--- To wrap this episode up, our TradexLIVE offer of the week is for 16-32oz Pacific Cod Fillets.

We have 15,000 lbs of #1 Quality Shatterpack fillets, January 2018 product of Alaska, ready for pick up in Seattle at $4.87/lb USD.
