--- The remaining four weeks of Alaskan Coho Salmon harvests are expected to supplement light inventories and bring larger fish to the market. The 2017 Alaska coho salmon forecast was 4.7 million fish, about 780,000 more than were harvested in 2016. According to the Blue Sheet by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, 3.16 million coho salmon have been harvested statewide to date. Weekly harvests peaked this year in the 2nd week of August where 584,000 fish were caught in one week. Typically we have seen bigger sizes coho land in the last half of the season, but that does not seem to be the case this year. The average fish size right now is 5.5 LBs in the round, and about 40 to 50 percent of the run is coming in under 5 LBs in the round. We predict another 4 weeks of strong landings remaining, and the salmon should begin to gain about a pound a week. This could mean we will see 8 or 9 pound cohos in the round by the end of the run. --- Fresh sales were stronger than anticipated this season, and domestic inventories were light, even though fishing is still underway. Troll caught skin-on IVP 1-3lb coho salmon fillets have been between $6.20 and $6.35 /LB during the month of August. Frozen at Sea headed and gutted cohos are quite pricy, and there are very limited sizes of the larger sizes. If you can find them, 4-6s are around the $6.00 mark per pound. Current offers on 2-4lb coho salmon are around the $6.00 price point too. For 3-5lb Net caught head on gutted coho salmon, prices on the West Coast are around $3.70 per pound.
